リトル・ミルトン（Little Milton、本名:ジェイムズ・ミルトン・キャンベル・ジュニア、1934年9月7日 - 2005年8月4日）は、米国のブルース・シンガー、ギタリストで、R&Bチャート1位のヒットとなった「We're Gonna Make It」で知られている[1]。その他ヒットとしては「Baby I Love You」、「Who's Cheating Who?」、「Grits Ain't Groceries (All Around the World)」などがある。
来歴
ミルトンは、1934年9月7日、ミシシッピ州インヴァネスに生まれた。出生名は、ジェイムズ・ミルトン・キャンベル・ジュニア。彼はミシシッピ州グリーヴィルで農民と地元のブルース・ミュージシャンによって育てられた[2]。12歳になった頃には、彼は 主にT-ボーン・ウォーカーおよび彼と同時代のその他ブルース、ロックンロールのアーティストたちに影響を受け、ストリート・ミュージシャンとして活動をしていた[2]。1950年代初頭、彼はミシシッピ・デルタ地域一帯で活動を展開した3人組のリズム・エイセズに加入した[3]。そのメンバーのひとり、エディー・キュージックはミルトンにギターの手ほどきをしている[4]。1951年ミルトンは、トランペット・レコードでピアニスト、ウィリー・ラヴのバッキング・メンバーとして何曲かレコーディングを行なっている[5][6]。
まだ10代ながら地元のバーでプレイをしていた1953年、彼はサン・レコードのサム・フィリップスのタレント・スカウトだったアイク・ターナーの目に留まった[7][8]。ミルトンは同レーベルと契約し、いくつかのシングルをレコーディングした[9]。いずれもラジオでブレイクすることもレコード店で売れることもなく、ミルトンはサン・レーベルを1955年に離れることとなった[2]。続く2年の間に彼はモダン・レコード傘下のミーティア・レコードからシングルをリリースしている。
1958年、ミルトンはイーストセントルイスに移住しセントルイスを拠点とするボビン・レコードを立ち上げた。同レーベルは最終的にレナード・チェスのチェス・レコードと配給契約を締結することとなった[10][2]。ミルトンはレコード・プロデューサーとしてアルバート・キング、フォンテラ・バスといったアーティストを有名にすることに貢献する傍ら、自身も初めて成功をつかむことに成功している[2]。いくつかのローカルな小ヒットののち、1962年のシングル「So Mean to Me」がビルボードのR&Bチャートでヒットし、14位を記録している[8]。
ツアー、その他アーティストのマネジメント、新たな作品のレコーディングに時間を割くことなどから短期間休止したのち、彼は1965年に音楽活動を再開し、B.B.キングにも似たより完成度の高いサウンドを展開するようになった。評判が芳しくなかった「Blind Man」(R&Bチャート86位)のあと、彼はヒット・シングルを連発するようになった。第一弾はブルース色のソウルの楽曲「We're Gonna Make It」で、これはR&Bチャートの1位に上り詰め、当時白人アーティストが大部分を占めていたトップ40ラジオでもかかるようになった。4位のR&Bヒットとなった「Who's Cheating Who?」がこれに続いた。これらの楽曲はいずれもその年の夏リリースのアルバム『We're Gonna Make It』に収録されている。
ミルトンの楽曲「Let Me Down Easy」はスペンサー・デイヴィス・グループが彼らの『セカンド・アルバム』(1965年)でカバーしたものの、レコード上にミルトンのソングライター・クレジットはなされなかった。彼自身は1968年にチェッカーよりこの曲のシングルをリリースしている[12]。また、エタ・ジェイムズは彼女の最後のアルバムとなった2011年の『The Dreamer』の最後の楽曲としてこの曲を取り上げた。
1960年代後半を通じて、ミルトンはほどほどなヒットとなったシングルをいくつかリリースしているものの、アルバムについては1969年の『Grits Ain't Groceries』まで新たなものを出すことはなかった。同作には同名のタイトル曲に加え、「Just a Little Bit」、「Baby, I Love You」といった楽曲が収録された。同年、レナード・チェスが亡くなると、ミルトンが所属したチェッカー・レコードは不安定な状況となり、その2年後にはスタックス・レコードに移籍している[2]。複雑なオーケストレーションを加えることで誕生した「That's What Love Will Make You Do」、およびライヴ・アルバム『What It Is: Live at Montreux』の「What It Is」でヒットを記録している。1973年に公開された映画『ワッツタックス/スタックス・コンサート』にも出演している[13]。しかしながら、1960年代後半から赤字経営が続き、1975年には倒産に追い込まれている[2]。
スタックスを離れた後、ミルトンはキャリアの維持に苦心している。エヴィデンスとの契約後、MCA傘下のモービル・フィデリティ・レコードに移籍、その後ようやくマラコ・レコードに落ち着いている。マラコでは1999年に『Welcome To Little Milton』で二度目のグラミー賞のノミネーションを受けた。彼は残りのキャリアの大半をこのレーベルで過ごしている[2]。彼の最後のヒット・シングルとなった「Age Ain't Nothin' But a Number」は1983年にリリースとなり、同名のアルバムにも収録された[2]。1988年には、ミルトンはブルースの殿堂入りを果たし、W.C.ハンディ・アワードも受賞している[2]。彼の最後のアルバム『Think of Me』はテラークより2005年5月にリリースとなり、イギリスのブルース・ロック・トリオ、ウィンターヴィルのピーター・ショルダーが3曲でソングライターとギタリストとして参加している。
ミルトンは2005年8月4日、脳卒中後の合併症により死去した。70歳だった[8][14]。彼の死後、ミシシッピ・ブルース・トレイル沿いのインヴァネスに彼の記念碑が建てられた[7]。
