ジョン・バロウズ賞（ジョン・バロウズしょう、英: John Burroughs Medal、または「ジョン・バロウズ・メダル」）は、アメリカ合衆国のジョン・バロウズ協会（John Burroughs Association）が毎年授与している文学賞である。自然を題材とし、科学的正確さ、著者自身による実地調査、そして優れた文章表現を兼ね備えていると審査員団が判断した年間最優秀の一冊に贈られる[1][2]。

19世紀アメリカを代表する博物学者・随筆家であるジョン・バロウズ（1837年 - 1921年）の名を冠しており、1926年の創設以来、現代のネイチャーライティングにおいて最も歴史長く権威ある賞のひとつに数えられている[3]。

概要

ジョン・バロウズ賞は、ジョン・バロウズ協会が運営する文学賞群の中核をなすものであり、同協会は他に若年読者向けのネイチャーライティングに贈られる「リバーバイ賞」（Riverby Award、1988年創設）と、エッセイ作品を対象とする「ジョン・バロウズ・ネイチャー・エッセイ賞」（John Burroughs Nature Essay Award、1994年創設）を併せて主催している[3]。歴代の受賞者にはレイチェル・カーソン、アルド・レオポルド、ロジャー・トーリー・ピーターソン、ジョン・マクフィー、ピーター・マシーセンといった、ネイチャーライティングを代表する書き手が名を連ねている[3][4]。

賞の対象は原則として自然科学的な知見に基づくノンフィクション作品であり、これまでにフィクション作品が選ばれたのは2度のみである。1928年には詩集が選出された例があるほか、2017年（2016年発表分）にはブライアン・ドイルの小説『マーティン・マーテン』（Martin Marten）が、創設からおよそ90年の歴史の中で初めて小説作品として同賞を受賞した[1][5]。

沿革

ジョン・バロウズ賞は1926年に創設され、初年度の受賞者はウィリアム・ビービ（Pheasants of the World）であった[6]。以後、同賞は毎年（一部年を除く）授与され続けており、ジョン・バロウズ協会の活動拠点であったアメリカ自然史博物館（American Museum of Natural History）と密接な関わりを保ちながら運営されてきた。

表彰式は例年4月にニューヨーク市内で開催され、近年はイェール・クラブ（Yale Club of New York City）などを会場とする昼食会形式で行われている[1][7]。

2026年には賞の創設から100周年を迎える節目の年となる。ジョン・バロウズ協会により記念行事が予定されている[8]。

選考基準と関連賞

ジョン・バロウズ協会によれば、同賞は「科学的正確さ、著者自身による実地でのフィールドワーク、そして優れた自然誌の文章表現」を兼ね備えた作品に贈られる[1][2]。候補作は毎年夏に推薦を受け付けたのち審査員団により選考され、最終候補作（ファイナリスト）が複数選出されたうえで受賞作が決定される[3][9]。

ジョン・バロウズ協会が主催する3つの文学賞（バロウズ賞、リバーバイ賞、ネイチャー・エッセイ賞）を単独で全て受賞した人物として、ロビン・ウォール・キマラーが知られる。彼女は2005年授与分のバロウズ賞を著書『Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses』（邦題『コケの自然誌』として知られる）で受賞したのち、2014年にはネイチャー・エッセイ賞を受賞している[3]。

ジョン・バロウズ賞は、受賞をきっかけに著者の知名度や読者層が大きく広がる例が多く、ネイチャーライティングというジャンルの発展に寄与してきたと評価されている[3]。オレゴン州立大学出版局は、自らが刊行した書籍が同賞を過去3度受賞したことについて、大学出版局としては異例の実績であるとコメントしている[12]。また、受賞者自身が受賞の経験を「執筆活動における最大級の栄誉」と振り返る例もみられる[13]。
